When you run a business not with the aim to make a profit but with the sole aim to do business, is when you will have an enduring business.
When the aim is to do business, the profit margins drop to create a trough into which trading and end-client interests flow. It acts like a vaccum waiting to be filled. Slowly the trough begins to level out, getting filled with more and more business. Now comes the tough part, to hold the interest of the customer after the initial attraction. The business now needs to create a bond with the customer. A fool-proof way is to maintain the highest standards of quality and not letting the margins get out of hand. Time and again the depression needs to be created to pull in new customers to make up for some lost ones. One reaps margins only when he is able to hold on to the created customers.
It seems sort of a selfish tactic, to suck all the business towards you. It is healthy for the customer but it seems not so good for the market itself. Lower margins creates pressure on the supply chain to lower their profits too.
